When we first opened our home to an exchange student, we were excited—but also unsure. It was new territory for our family. What made all the difference was our Local Coordinator. Each month, they showed up with encouragement, guidance, and genuine care. They didn’t just check boxes; they checked in on hearts. They supported our student’s well-being and made sure we felt confident and supported as a host family too.
Watching that kind of steady, compassionate leadership planted a seed in me. I saw how powerful that role was. I saw how one person could shape an experience that would stay with a young adult, and a family, for a lifetime. And I knew I wanted to be that person for someone else.
Stepping into the role, I quickly realized how much I loved it. Staying in the role was easy. I began meeting incredible young adults from across Europe and Asia, each one bringing their own dreams, traditions, and perspectives. Seeing America and everyday life, through their eyes was refreshing. Simple things felt new again. Their joy, curiosity, and growth reminded me month after month why this work matters.
The most rewarding moments have never been about paperwork or meetings. They’ve been about connection. There is nothing quite like watching a host family and an exchange student slowly move from being polite strangers… to becoming real family. You see it in the shared dinners, the inside jokes, the support during hard days, and the tears at the airport goodbye. Somewhere along the way, love quietly takes root.
Hosting and coordinating is a journey. There are moments when you step in to help navigate challenges. Cultural misunderstandings happen. Homesickness happens. Growth isn’t always comfortable. But then there are the beautiful moments: the first school event, holiday traditions shared for the first time, proud smiles over accomplishments big and small. Love and laughs are shared. Tears are shed. And through it all, memories are made that last forever. It’s not just one success story — it’s the entire experience.
Personally, this role has given me purpose. It has strengthened my belief that people all around the world are ready for peace, understanding, and connection. When you sit at a dinner table and watch cultures blend in the most natural way, you realize how much we truly have in common.
Professionally and personally, it has fit seamlessly into my life. My schedule is flexible, and I make the time because it matters. It has become a meaningful extension of my own hosting journey. Month after month, it remains the most rewarding part of what I do.
If someone asked me whether they should become a Local Coordinator, my answer would be simple: Do it. You will love it. Because at the heart of it all, this work isn’t just about exchange students. It’s about building families across borders.
