“I am Jette, 16 years old and, of course, an exchange student from Germany. I am spending the school year in Saint Petersburg, Florida. Here, I am living with my mums Kellie and Carola, and my sister Zoe. Very soon you will be the person sitting at this table and hopefully having an amazing time”.
“For me, it felt like they were my family from the day I arrived. Now I am here for 8 months and I don´t want to leave. But knowing that I won´t leave them forever and that I am going to come back makes leaving a lot easier”.
“They try to teach me a lot and let me become the best version of myself. Living away from my family was not hard at all with their love and support. They enjoy being active and have a fun time rather than just serious conversations. As I said, our lives are all busy which means that they work a lot. But they do make time for family vacations, traveling, and fun experiences. They don´t live to work, they work to live. I can´t express how much I love all of them. They are my family”.
“Zoe is 13 right now and I love her even if she drives me crazy sometimes. But that is just like living with a sibling. Zoe loves reading and is a real nerd. She takes a book everywhere she goes. I am not kidding, everywhere. She loves jazz, dancing around the house, and singing like nothing is holding her back”.
“What I want to add is that when I read their first information I was really happy about the fact that I was going to stay with two women. Also, that they were both medical professionals (in case something happens they know exactly what to do), and that Carola speaks German, which is my native language. Those factors made me feel very comfortable”.
Hosting an exchange student is about having a huge heart that has a lot of room for love in it. You are bringing this exchange student into your home to help make their dreams come true. You are showing your family that just because someone isn’t related to you, doesn’t mean they don’t deserve love. Teaching your children this is such a valuable lesson to learn. There is no greater gift in life than adding a new member to your family and gaining another person to love.
If you are looking to give back to the community, make a difference in the world, or make someone’s dreams come true, then hosting an exchange student surely is for you! We are always looking for host families for a semester or a school year. Our host families provide room and board, 3 meals a day, and transportation to and from school. Most importantly, our host families provide a loving home where a foreign exchange student can excel in school, join a new family, and create an unforgettable memory.
